Sleep Analysis: Finding the Richmond Sleepers

With every Car of Tomorrow(CoT) race, it only brings more information. Two races ago Phoenix held their third race with the new plow car model. Phoenix was highly competitive which illustrates how well the teams are figuring out the short, flat tracks. That bodes well for race fans on Saturday night. Unfortunately, there are few drivers in the sleepers category that can share the fans' excitement. There are a few drivers that will grind out top 20's, but a top ten might be asking too much this week.

  • Paul Menard: Do not fall into the "momentum trap". Menard had a nice run at Talladega, but nothing from that track translates to Richmond. His average finish is 21.0 and his best driver rating is 57.5. Menard has improved in year two, but not enough to be picked every week. He did place 16th last spring, but was hardly a result of a great performance.
  • Bobby Labonte: Labonte has had nice runs at both Phoenix and Richmond, but zero wins. In 30 starts he has 4 top 5's and 10 top 10's. He had a top ten run going in 2006 but his crew pulled an incredible groaner:
On the last stop, the left rear tire got put on the right rear and the right rear got put on the left rear. That hasn't happened in about a hundred years. I was wrecking after that. I just had to hold on for 40 laps.
    Yikes.
  • Travis Kvapil: Kvapil is quietly becoming a very solid option on a weekly basis. His best Richmond Cup finish is 11th. Now he needs a good nickname like Kviuet (er, quiet) Kvapil.
  • Casey Mears: Wondering what Casey Mears' achilles heel is? Flat, short tracks. In ten races Mears has zero top tens and six laps led. Throw in Phoenix and Loudon and it's an ugly picture. 1 top 10 in 29 combined starts.
  • Jamie McMurray: His six race Richmond driver rating is a middling 65.7. Of course all the pieces are in place for him to run well, but you have no idea which week that will be.
  • Elliott Sadler: Sadler's only top ten came in 2005, but he is experienced and talented enough to find his way around the track. He had a very good run going at Phoenix before the engine failed.
  • Robby Gordon: Which Robby will show up this week? He has run pretty well this year and owns a comfortable spot in the standings. Of course we all know that Bad Robby is trolling nearby and can surface at anytime.
  • Scott Riggs: It's not Riggs' best type of track, but Haas-CNC has had nice runs in the past. Johnny Sauter scored a top five last year with essentially the same team.
  • David Reutimann: Richmond is the site of Reutimann's best Cup finish to date, 13th last fall. He had a nice 75.7 driver rating as well.
  • Mark Martin: 44 starts, 13 top 5's, 23 top 10's, 417 laps led, an 84.6 driver rating in the last six races but only one career win. Remember, he was outstanding at Phoenix where he led 68 laps and finished 5th.
  • Michael Waltrip: In 41 Richmond starts, Waltrip has 2 top tens. He has 4 lead lap finishes. Raise your hand if you want to start the #55 this week?
  • Reed Sorenson: The third year driver is not running well anywhere right now, and is definitely a pass this week. Richmond? More like, Poormond.
  • Sam Hornish Jr.: No Cup starts at Richmond and one 43rd place in last year's Busch race. He does have two wins and a second in IRL Richmond races, however.
  • Regan Smith: Aside from his run at Martinsville, the best thing Smith has done is stay inside the top 35, barely.
  • Michael McDowell: Believe or not, McDowell has actually had a decent Cup debut. The finishes aren't there yet, but he spends the majority of races on the lead lap and usually evades trouble.
