NASCAR Season Part II

The second half of the season begins this week at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. This is the 7th race ever run at Chicagoland and every year the racing gets better.

My Pick To Win Chicagoland

My pick to win this weekend is Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has never finished worse than 6th at Chicago in 5 starts. He hasn’t won there yet either but he always seems to run very well.

Chicago Front Runners

Jeff Gordon got his first win here last year after a controversial bump to Matt Kenseth at the end of the race to pass him. Jeff would have gotten by Matt anyway but it would have been nicer to see him pass Matt cleanly. Jeff now leads the point standings by 277 points over Denny Hamlin after finishing 5th at Daytona last week. It doesn’t look like the 100-point deduction is going to hurt this team in the least.

Kevin Harvick won the first 2 races at Chicago and was just average in his next 3 starts there until last year when he came back to finish 4th. Kevin would like nothing better than to come away with a good finish to start out the second half after being involved in an early wreck at Daytona last week where he returned for the first time since winning the Daytona 500.

Matt Kenseth finished 2nd two years ago and very well could have finished in the same place last year. Matt has really come on at Chicago the last couple of years and seems to have what it takes to go to victory lane there. He would like nothing better than to get a win so close to home.

Tony Stewart has a win and 4 top 5 finishes at Chicago. Tony has not won a point’s race yet this season and is getting perturbed with the media who keeps bringing it up. This team is so close to winning right now that it is only a matter of time before they visit victory lane again. When this happens don’t be surprised to see Tony reel off a bunch of wins in a short stretch.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. got a win at Chicago 2 years ago and followed it up with a 5th place finish last year. Dale should have won in 2002 also but a mistake by his crew chief late in the race cost him the win. With only a handful of laps left and Junior winning he was called down pit road under a caution and everyone else stayed out on the track and dale had to settle for a 10th place finish that time. He definitely has what it takes to win here again.

Kurt Busch has finished 8th the last 2 years at Chicago and teammate, Ryan Newman, has won here in the past. Both of these teams are getting better every week and will visit victory lane soon. Now is the time for both of these guys to make a run if they want to make the Chase this season.
