Proof That Dale Earnhardt Jr Is Not The Most Popular
Sorry Jr. Nation, but Dale Earnhardt Jr is not the most popular and no amount of flooding the polls is going to change that fact!. His father wasn’t the most popular either. Neither is Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, nor even Bill Elliot or Richard Petty. The most popular from today’s list of the driver’s point standings is…. {drum roll please}….. Jon Wood.
Yes, Jon Wood. There are approximately 4,913 people in the US with the name “Jon Wood.” The top ten list actually looks like this (I included The King for curiosity’s sake, and he ranked in the top ten):
- 4,913 – Jon Wood
- 3,927 – Mark Martin
- 928 – Jimmie Johnson
- 766 – Michael McDowell
- 728 – Carl Edwards
- 394 – Tony Stewart
- 391 – Richard Petty
- 184 – Ryan Newman
- 179 – David Gilliland
- 165 – Jeff Gordon
According to HowManyOfMe.com, “There are 305,421,505 people in the United States of America. If everyone in the U.S. lined up single file, the line would stretch around the Earth almost 7 times. That’s a lot of people. The U.S. Census Bureau statistics tell us that there are at least 88,799 different last names and 5,163 different first names in common use in the United States.< Some names are more common than others.
A link to How Many of Me found it’s way into my Inbox through one of those annoying family members of mine who insists upon forwarding what must be every stupid e-mail chain there has ever been. That said, the thought of discovering approximately “how many of me” were out there was just too tempting. You see, with a name like mine (James Jones), I’ve had my fair share of mistaken identities.
Once, when I worked in the emergency room, there were two other “James Jones” in the ER (both were patients), and the doctor on duty had the first name of “James” as well. Boy was that amusing and scary at the same time, in a patient treatment and confidentiality sense!

Oh sure, it’s come in quite handy at times too. Like when my hometown library finally caught up with me and sent me a bill for the Moby Dick book that I didn’t return 26 years, 4 months and 17 days ago when it became past due. “Oh no, you must have the wrong James Jones. How many “James Jones” do you have in your computer anyway?” Invariably there is more than a handful, and plenty enough to cause “reasonable doubt.” Score one for an alias-like name! No, really, I never checked that book out.
Of course that works both ways. I’ve sworn to Blockbuster time and time again that, “I never rented the Powerpuff Girls for Nintendo 64! I’ve never even owned a Nintendo 64!”
So, as you can see from the graphic above, there are approximately 31,560 other people with the name “James Jones.” There are approximately 5,082,333 people in the U.S. with the first name “James” (statistically the 1st most popular first name). There are approximately 1,896,712 people in the U.S. with the last name “Jones” (statistically the 4th most popular last name). So, I’d say there’s a good chance some of you out there know “me.”
It looks to me that struggling NASCAR teams could easily go out and get themselves another Tony Stewart, Mark Martin or Jeff Gordon if their driver isn’t performing well. LOL Hmmm, I wonder if there is another Dick Trickle out there somewhere?
So, how many of YOU are out there? Can anyone honestly top my name on the popularity list?
