The New and Improved Onebadwheel

“Wow!

It’s the final week before the 2009 Daytona 500.

Back in November when the checkered flag waved at Homestead-Miami I breathed a long sigh and welcomed the break from the weekly grind of running this site. I probably (in hindsight) took a little too much time off.

I had definite goals in mind for the 2009 NASCAR season:

  • Add two more fantasy NASCAR games.
  • Expand the blog section.
  • Have the entire NASCAR Cup Series race results back to the start of the Series in 1949.

I have alot more goals as well…but I will keep those under wraps like a Christmas (in July?) present for you.

First off…Welcome Back and Welcome!

I want to welcome all you old-timers that have enjoyed the site during the last three years and welcome all the new people that somehow have just now found us or are new to NASCAR.

If you are curious about how the site got its start you can read my about me page. More importantly though, to me (and you), is where the site is going and the great things we have in store.

To tell of the future, I need to back up a few months first. I’ve been friends with a couple of savvy web developers for the last year-and-a-half. Brit & Gish own a web development company called Figaro Interactive and we have partnered to make Onebadwheel even better.

We’ve got Fantasy NASCAR games

We have three free fantasy NASCAR games for you to play.

Last year about 900 of us played Champs, Chumps & Sleepers. I’d say it was a rousing success. In Champs, Chumps & Sleepers the object is to pick six drivers from three groups as your team. The two ‘Champ’ drivers are drivers from the 13th to 24th position in driver points. The two ‘Chump’ drivers are from the 1st to 12th position in driver points. The two ‘Sleeper’ drivers are from the 25th to 36th position in driver points. The twist is you want just your ‘Champ’ and ‘Sleeper’ drivers to do well. You want your ‘Chump’ drivers to do bad. Your score for the week is based on the points earned by your team of six drivers but calculated like this: (Champs + Sleepers) – Chumps = Your Score. The NASCAR knowledge level on this game is: Advanced.

Our first new game is Gutowski’s Big 18. In this game you can use a driver from your pool of 18 drivers (top 18 in driver points from the 2008 season) two times throughout the year as ‘your driver’. 18 drivers x 2 uses = 36 races. Your points for the week are equal to the finish position of ‘your driver’. If your driver finishes 13th you get 13 points. The goal is to have the lowest points. The NASCAR knowledge level on this game is: Intermediate.

Our other new game is Head2Head. Each week we present you with 10 driver matchups. You select which driver for each head-to-head match-up you think will finish ahead of the other. You get one point for each correct pick. The higher your score the better. The game play level on this game is: Easy.

Each game will run in segments so people can join anytime in the season and still win some prizes or bragging rights. Spring segment is races 1 – 13. Summer segment is races 14 – 26. Chase segment is races 27 – 36. Champs, Chumps & Sleepers is presented by Pit Crew Barbeque who is donating weekly 15% off coupon codes to the high scoring player and Pit Crew Packs (a beau coup of barbecuing goodies and beverage mixes) to the segment winners.

More weekly content

I’m really proud to point out that our blog line-up has more than doubled! This should mean a more diverse group of conversations that you can join in. Plus, more current content to check back every day for.

These additional features on the site are just the tip of the iceberg of what we have in store for the 2009 season. If you haven’t signed up for our free weekly NASCAR Fantasy Tips newsletter go over and add your name to the list to stay on top of all the NASCAR and Fantasy NASCAR we have to offer.

Here’s to a great 2009 NASCAR season…and may your driver win…yes Pam, even if it is Jimmie Johnson ;)
