NASCAR Tracks Types
There are 4 distinct types of race tracks run in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series.
Some NASCAR tracks could be classified within a couple of groups. Richmond International Raceway is a 3/4 mile track. I have grouped it with short tracks since it is under a mile. But, things get pretty racy and fast at Richmond. In this regard it almost could be brought into the Speedway category.
Throughout this site when you see reference to a track type, these are the guidelines I use to distinguish them.
See the list of similar NASCAR tracks.
Short Tracks:
NASCAR short tracks, as listed on this site, are race tracks that are less than 1 mile in length.
- Bristol Motor Speedway (0.53 mile)
- Martinsville Speedway (0.53 mile)
- Nashville Speedway (0.60 mile)
- Richmond International Raceway (0.75 mile)
Speedways:
NASCAR Speedways, as listed on this site, are race tracks that are over 1 mile and not more than 2 miles in length. With the exception of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway which are both 2.50 miles. I keep them in the Speedway track type due to their unique configurations and low turn banking.
- Atlanta Motor Speedway (1.54 mile)
- Auto Club Speedway (2.00 mile)
- Chicagoland Speedway (1.50 mile)
- Darlington Raceway (1.37 mile)
- Dover International Speedway (1.00 mile)
- Homestead-Miami Speedway (1.50 mile)
- Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2.50 mile)
- Kansas Speedway (1.50 mile)
- Las Vegas Motor Speedway (1.50 mile)
- Lowes Motor Speedway (1.50 mile)
- Michigan International Speedway (2.00 mile)
- New Hampshire Motor Speedway (1.06 mile)
- North Carolina Speedway (1.02 mile)
- Phoenix International Raceway (1.00 mile)
- Pocono Raceway (2.50 mile)
- Texas Motor Speedway (1.50 mile)
Superspeedways:
NASCAR Superspeedways, as listed on this site, are race tracks that are more than 2 miles in length. Additionally, they require the use of a restrictor plate to keep speeds under 200mph. Superspeedways are also unique in their high turn banking.
- Daytona International Speedway (2.50 mile)
- Talladega Superspeedway (2.66 mile)
Road Courses:
NASCAR Road Courses, as listed on this site, are race tracks that are not the normal oval shape. They break the tradition of go-fast-turn-left of the normal NASCAR race.
- Infineon Raceway (1.99 mile)
- Watkins Glen International (2.45 mile)
